Intensive care in foals

The treatment and care of the sick newborn foal imply an evaluation and control of all its organs and systems, since multisystem pathologies are frequent. This article addresses the different aspects to be considered in intensive care, in order of priority in relation to the risk of survival. The cardiopulmonary resuscitation protocol is described, as well as the guidelines for maintaining cardiac and respiratory functions. The basic principles of treatment and maintenance of hydroelectrolytic and acid-base equilibrium are also addressed, along with guidelines for the control and support of other potentially affected organs and systems. The evaluation and immediate treatment of the critical foal are vital for successful management.
