The objective of every clinical treatment consists of the functional recovery of the injury, while minimizing the risk of recurrences. The traditional belief that total rest or a “rest in the field” are capable of curing all injuries, has given way to new rehabilitation techniques that respond to the increasingly competitive and demanding needs of the market. Thus, the implementation of medical and surgical treatments, as well as localised physiotherapy techniques, must be complemented by an appropriate dynamic rehabilitation programme. This ensures the functionality of the injured area – and of the horse as a whole – and maximises the animal’s physical state and sports fitness capacity. The specific knowledge of different dynamic rehabilitation techniques and their benefits and drawbacks, are key to giving appropriate instructions for exercise which will enable the horse to recover its sports function without risk of recurrences. Every horse requires a specifically designed plan that is adapted to their injury and physical condition.
